Working side-by-side with the community, Mile High United Way (MHUW) tackles an audacious goal – to take on the big, complex, even daunting issues that face metro Denver. MHUW is changing the odds for families and individuals in our community and moving them out of poverty. Every day they forge unexpected partnerships, seek out the source of the problem, challenge current thinking, champion innovative ideas, and take action. Because, when the full force of the metro Denver community is united, no problem is too big to solve together.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado has been partnering with Mile High United Way for over 20 years. This year we are honored to be one of 84 recent recipients of a Mile High United Way Strategic Investment Grant. These grants provide funding to high-performing organizations in metro Denver who are implementing strategies directly aligned with MHUW’s four Community Impact Goals: Giving All Children a Strong Start, Reading Matters, Developing Tomorrow's Talent, and Creating Economic Opportunity for All. This grant will help Big Brothers Big Sisters provide one-to-one mentoring for 1,250 low-income youth in metro Denver. We are excited to continue working with MHUW to ensure youth in metro Denver communities have the support and resources necessary to reach their full potential.
Strategic Investment Grants are just one of many ways Mile High United Way invests in the community to change the odds for individuals and families. Big Brothers Big Sisters frequently refers families in our programs to MHUW’s 2-1-1, a free and confidential community referral service that connects callers with resources that provide food, shelter, rent assistance, clothing, child care options and other types of community assistance. We have also have utilized MHUW’s building space for volunteer trainings and match enrichment activities, including our annual holiday party for children in our Community Based Mentoring Program. Additionally, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado participates in and benefits from MHUW’s annual Workplace Giving Campaign. We also utilize VolunteerUnited to recruit volunteer mentors. Finally, our staff have attended other United Way events and trainings, including trainings on logic models and evaluation. These are just a few of the ways MHUW unites people, ideas, and resources to advance the common good. To learn more about MHUW’s programs, click here.
