Match of the Month: Leo and Chris

Posted: January 11, 2017

When Leo was first interviewed to be a Little in the Fort Logan Northgate afterschool Impact program, his mom emphasized that he loved to run around and would need a Big who could keep up. They got just that and more with Big Brother Chris! These two have been matched since August of 2015, and they haven’t slowed down since.

Bonded by their shared love of being active and having fun, Chris and Leo combine to form a dynamic duo when they meet after school twice a month. Good luck to anyone trying to keep up with them playing Capture the Flag, soccer, kickball, or any of the other myriad of games they enjoy playing together. They are each other’s biggest supporters when on the same team, but also enjoy the occasional healthy rivalry of Big vs. Little. Despite being the youngest kid in the program, Chris helps give Leo the confidence to keep up with the older kids.

On the rare occasion Chris and Leo do take a moment to slow down, they can be found engrossed in conversations ranging from the makes and models of their favorite cars to the depth and magnitude of outer space. Chris is a former mechanic who works in buying and selling cars, which is perfect for Leo because he wants to be a mechanic when he grows up! Leo enjoys learning and Chris helps emphasize the importance of school by always being engaged and encouraging with Leo’s academics.

What really sets this match apart is their dedication to each other and the program. At the start of the school year they worked together on a goal-setting activity to help Leo make the most of the 4th grade. As one of his goals, Leo listed that he wanted to learn more about electricity and batteries. At their next session, Chris came prepared to help Leo fulfill that goal. Having done some research on his own, and equipped with a few hand-drawn diagrams, Chris spent their one on one time explaining the fundamentals of electricity to an enthralled Leo. Whether it is school or games, these two always have a blast working together and growing their friendship.
