Meeting Community Needs

Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring provides children with new perspectives and opens their eyes to opportunities for a bright future. Our mentoring program gives children what they need to succeed in school and in life. From the motivation to stay in school and out of trouble to a little hope for a great future, every child needs something a little different and that’s where an individual mentor comes in.

Our model is a proven youth development strategy that provides short- and long-term positive outcomes for youth as well as a way for volunteers to contribute to changing their community.

At the organization’s inception, Big Brothers Big Sisters served children whose fathers were serving in the first World War. Today, we continue to provide mentors to children with deployed military parents but we also reach out to kids

  • From Low-income Families
  • From Single-parent Families and
  • Children who have Incarcerated Parents.

The Need Is Great

There are over 35,000 children in 2nd through 5th grades in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado’s current service area who come from low-income, single-parent families. We know that thousands more could benefit from a mentor but these children in particular regularly face daunting obstacles in their success in school and their opportunities later in life.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado is uniquely positioned to meet these community needs. Unlike other youth development strategies that address only one component of a child’s success, Big Brothers Big Sisters provides a mentor who can impact a child’s life in so many ways, and tailor activities for individual children. We work with parents and caregivers, teachers, and mentors to help each child succeed.
