BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS WEEK

WHEREAS, in every city, including the City of Colorado Springs, there is a significant population of youths who need and can benefit from a positive mentoring relationship with an adult; and
WHEREAS, adults in our community are answering the call by becoming mentors and thereby serving as an example of community service and leadership; and
WHEREAS, every year, more than 450 youth ages 7-17 are being served by mentors through the work of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Pikes Peak’s mentoring programs; and
WHEREAS, participation in this program has been found to have a positive impact on youth by helping them to form positive relationships, supporting them to reach educational goals and preventing their participation in risky behavior such as alcohol and drug use; and
WHEREAS, the growth of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Pikes Peak program is an example of the spirit of volunteer service which makes our community unique; and
WHEREAS, this program continues to rise to the challenge of providing mentors and raising funds necessary for the program’s success.
WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters embodies the concept of investing time and care in the lives of youths of our community now, so that they have the tools they need to grow into contributing adult members of our community in the future.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Lionel Rivera, Mayor of the City of Colorado Springs, do hereby proclaim the week of August 9-15 as
BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS WEEK in the City of Colorado Springs and call upon our schools, places of business, and general citizenry to recognize the achievements of this Mentoring Program and to partner with and support them in their endeavors for the benefit of all.
