BBBSC Alumni Spotlight

In 2014, Big Rachel and Little Vivian were matched in BBBSC’s Community mentorship program. From the beginning, Rachel and Vivian formed a strong connection, diving into a myriad of activities together. They visited museums, tried various sports, baked fun recipes, and saw movies.

As their match progressed, Rachel discovered that mentorship went beyond just sharing guidance—it evolved into a two-way street of learning. Her goal was to support Vivian through the challenges of childhood, offering guidance while also modeling what it means to be a good person. Rachel expressed, “I hoped that I helped her problem solve and work through those challenges, but ultimately, and above all else, to think of others and to do what is right.” In witnessing Vivian’s resiliency during tough periods in her life, Rachel learned firsthand how to approach life with grit and optimism.

Rachel enjoyed being a Big Sister because it wasn’t just about trying new activities with Vivian; it was about seeing the world from Vivian’s perspective. It was incredibly rewarding witnessing the genuine joy on Vivian’s face as she experienced new things. Beyond the excitement of exploring different activities, Rachel valued the meaningful conversations they had.

Since Vivian graduated from the program, the two have stayed in touch. They text every so often and are hoping to see each other in person soon. It has been special for Rachel to see her get settled into a new stage in her life, getting her own apartment and navigating her career. “We can now relate to each other on another level and it’s super special,” Rachel said. In addition to being an Alumni Big, Rachel is also an Alumni of the Associate Board. We are grateful for her support of BBBSC and are excited to see how her and Vivian’s relationship progresses.
